Autumn is here, nourish your skin! Beauty tips for October

October has arrived, and the long-term state of emergency has been lifted. It will be difficult to completely return to our normal lives before COVID-19, but I think this marks the beginning of a new normal. Let's continue to live each day without letting our guard down.
October is the beginning of the fruitful autumn season. It's also the time to give your skin plenty of nourishment before winter arrives.

Here are some beauty tips for October.

Skin condition in October The turning point where water loss and sebum secretion cross paths

In October, the amount of water that evaporates from the skin continues to increase, while the amount of sebum secreted, which can be considered the skin's last resort, continues to decrease. As shown in the figure, these two levels eventually cross each other on the graph, and the skin enters a period when it is headed straight for dryness.

October is the height of autumn, and there are days when the temperature suddenly drops. Have you ever felt cold because you were late in changing your loungewear and bedding at home? This is also a time when your body and skin cannot keep up with the changes in the weather, causing poor circulation and a slow metabolism, leading to various skin problems such as dullness, stiffness, roughness, and dryness. Be mindful of moisturizing your skin and paying attention to skin care that provides plenty of nutrition to the skin's functions, which tend to deteriorate.

The history of makeup (makeup, cleansing and conditioning the face for better makeup application, westernization, and the concept of skin food)

With the aim of considering cosmetics as skin food, we have summarized the history of cosmetics. You can see that after the appearance of beauty serums, the concept of skin care was born, which provides nutrients that lead to beautiful skin.

1. The early days of makeup (it all started with makeup)
It can be said that makeup, including in Japan, began with makeup. It is said that the word "pigment" was born from the fact that people of different races and ethnicities would apply colorings made from ground minerals to their faces and bodies as a form of so-called "fashion" or "self-expression." Looking back at the history of makeup in Japan, the basic custom was to use white powder as a base and rouge. There are records that men in the noble society also used white powder from ancient times. The four-piece set of white powder, lipstick, shaved eyebrows and eyebrows painted on the top of the forehead, and blackened teeth continued to be the basic makeup in Japan until the Meiji era.

2. A revolution in makeup (preparing natural skin for makeup)
During the Edo period, basic makeup became popular among the common people, and facial washes using rice bran bags and lotions made from loofah water were developed with the aim of making the skin easier to apply makeup to.

3) Westernization of Makeup <br data-mce-fragment="1">In the Meiji era, the government's desire to westernize led to the prohibition of blackening of teeth and shaving of eyebrows. From the Taisho era to the Showa era, as women entered the workforce, the all-white face powder was replaced by a more multi-colored one, stick-type lipstick appeared, and cold creams and milky lotions for skin care also appeared.

4. The emergence of beauty serums (the emergence of the concept of skin food)
The concept of beauty serums is new, having been around for only about 30 years.
In Japan, beauty serums released in 1975 are said to be the first in the industry, and the official classification name "beauty serum" was not introduced until 1986. Cosmetics manufacturers have been competing to bring beauty serums to market based on the development of ingredients that claim various effects and efficacies. It can be said that the concept of skin food - delivering ingredients that lead to beautiful skin - has grown into the beauty serum genre as the pinnacle of cosmetics.

With summer coming to an end and autumn in full swing in October, how is your skin doing? Even if you don't have any skin concerns right now, don't let your guard down and make autumn your time for skin care and beauty, and make sure to replenish your skin with the nutrients it needs to be beautiful in preparation for winter.

This concludes my October beauty routine. In the next issue, I'd like to talk about skin care for the winter season.
