The historic days of the Olympic and Paralympic Games held during the COVID-19 pandemic will come to an end with the closing of the Paralympics (September 5th). We have been living "with COVID-19" for over a year and a half, and even though vaccinations are progressing, the number of infected people has exploded, and the situation remains unpredictable and unguarded.
Meanwhile, as the season progresses, autumn gradually becomes more apparent. The temperature and humidity begin to drop, and it is a season when you can concentrate on things calmly, so it is described as "Autumn of XX." As we will likely continue to spend a lot of time at home, why not find your own "Autumn of XX" as a change of pace?
This time, we will be sharing some skin care tips for early autumn as the seasons change from summer to autumn.
In early autumn, the weather conditions change from early to mid to late September.
Looking back at the weather data for Tokyo from September last year, 2020, we can see that the weather conditions changed significantly from the beginning to the middle to the end of the month.

Early spring
With an average temperature exceeding 30°C and plenty of sunshine, it was truly the lingering heat of summer.
- Mid-month
The average temperature and humidity both began to drop (with only one day reaching a midsummer temperature), and this was a time when you could feel the transition from summer to autumn.
- Late in the month
Due to the autumn rains, the humidity suddenly increased and the hours of sunshine decreased, but unlike the rainy season, the temperature tended to drop.
September, the beginning of autumn, is a time of fluctuation as the seasons change and three weather conditions coexist. Fluctuations in the external environment (weather) can be stressful for your skin.
"Summer skin fatigue" x "seasonal fluctuations in early autumn" = skin fluctuations
September is when fatigue from a harsh summer begins to show on your skin. As it is the change of seasons, the weather and climate change can lead to changes in your skin as well. Tired skin tends to have less resistance to various stresses, impairing healthy skin metabolism and making your skin more prone to delicate, sensitive skin. To avoid specific symptoms such as dryness, stiffness, dullness, spots, and wrinkles, it is important to take a skin care approach that will soothe tired summer skin and address skin that is prone to sensitivity.

Skin care for early autumn and the changing seasons
1. Late summer heat
As long as you can feel the summer heat, continue with your summer skin care routine. Skin tends to get dirty and have open pores due to sweating, so keep it clean with gentle cleansing and washing your face, and keep your skin in a state where cosmetics after lotion can be thoroughly absorbed.
2. The transition period to autumn
When you feel the weather getting cooler, it marks the beginning of the transition from summer to autumn, so try taking some time to soothe your tired skin with a face mask. Soothing your mood will likely also lead to healing your skin. For the delicate area around the eyes, we recommend daily care with eye sheets.
3. During autumn rains Unlike the rainy season, temperatures are not so high during autumn rains, and the high humidity caused by the rainfall is a good environment for moisturizing your skin. Since you will be spending your time in contact with humid air, you don't need to worry too much about moisturizing; instead, choose a serum that suits the skin condition you want to achieve and protect, and work on strengthening your skin care routine with the serum in mind.
We have given you some skin care tips for the transition from summer to autumn and early autumn. In the next issue, we will talk about skin care for the full autumn season.
